Siniensi Primary & Junior High School

Siniensi Primary School and Siniensi Junior High School together form the wider Siniensi Basic School within the Siniensi community in the Builsa North Municipal District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. The schools serve children from a predominantly rural farming community where agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for many families, and where access to educational resources, infrastructure, and wider learning opportunities has historically been limited.

The Siniensi community forms part of the wider Builsa area of northern Ghana, where the dominant local language spoken is Buli, spoken by the Builsa people. Like many rural communities within the district, schools in Siniensi have historically faced challenges relating to classroom infrastructure, sanitation facilities, educational resources, staffing facilities, and access to quality learning materials.

Despite these challenges, these schools within the Siniensi community have continued to maintain active academic and extracurricular participation within the district. Siniensi Junior High School in particular has previously been recognised locally for strong academic performance despite operating within limited conditions. A 2019 article written by a student from the school highlighted that, in one BECE year, 8 out of 9 students successfully passed their examinations, while also describing the school’s participation in extracurricular activities and sports.

Public accounts and community reports from previous years described several challenges affecting the wider Siniensi Basic School system, including limited classroom facilities, shortages of learning materials, inadequate educational resources, and the absence of proper toilet and staff room facilities. Some reports described teachers working under trees or verandas due to inadequate staff spaces and infrastructure limitations within the school environment.

Siniensi Basic School represents one of Homeland Ghana’s longest-standing partnerships since the organisation first began working directly within the community in 2018. Homeland Ghana’s earliest interventions focused on improving learning conditions and expanding access to educational resources for both the primary school and junior high school.

Over the years, Homeland Ghana has supported students and teachers at the schools through the distribution of textbooks, exercise books, pens, pencils, and other learning materials alongside wider educational support projects and school-based interventions.

One of the organisation’s major projects within Siniensi Primary School was the creation of a school library designed to strengthen literacy development and encourage reading among students. The library was equipped with over 500 storybooks alongside furniture, tables, chairs, and additional learning resources to create a more supportive and engaging reading environment for children.

Homeland Ghana also carried out extensive classroom renovation works within the school. This included repainting and refurbishing classrooms, adding educational wall art and learning visuals, repairing damaged flooring, and installing new doors and windows to improve classroom safety, comfort, and functionality for both students and teachers.

Alongside these infrastructure improvements, Homeland Ghana delivered an extra classes programme at the school which ran for more than five months. The programme provided additional academic support and learning opportunities for students outside normal classroom hours, helping strengthen participation, confidence, and educational engagement.
