Kori Basic School is located in the Builsa North Municipal District of Ghana’s Upper East Region.
The school serves children and young people from a predominantly rural, farming community. Buli is widely spoken in the area.
Education in the Kori Community
Like many rural communities, Kori faces challenges that can affect children’s access to education and the day-to-day work of teachers.
One of these challenges is transportation. A deteriorated bridge along the route into Kori has made travelling to and from the community difficult. This particularly affects teachers who travel from Sandema to teach at the schools.
Teachers may have to navigate the damaged area or use longer alternative routes to reach the community. Despite these difficulties, they continue to make the journey to school and support their students.
School Infrastructure Challenges
Kori Primary School also faces infrastructure challenges that affect the learning environment.
Parts of the school remain unfinished, including classroom blocks that require further work. Some classrooms lack completed walls, flooring, doors and other essential finishing, while other areas require cementing and protection from the weather.
These conditions can make teaching and learning more difficult, particularly during the rainy season. Wind, rain and dust can affect classrooms and interrupt lessons, while unfinished facilities can make it harder to create a comfortable learning environment for students.
Over the years, members of the wider community and other supporters have also contributed resources to improve conditions at the schools, including donations of desks and teachers’ tables.
Our Partnership with Kori Basic School
Kori Primary School and Kori Junior High School are long-standing partner schools of Homeland Ghana Educational Foundation.
Our work with the Kori school community began in 2020 with a school uniform support project at Kori Primary School. Through the project, new tailored school uniforms were provided to children who did not have suitable uniforms for school.
Since then, our relationship with the schools has grown. Students have received basic school supplies, including exercise books, pens and pencils. These resources support children’s participation in lessons while helping to reduce some of the cost of basic learning materials for families.
Around 2023, Kori Junior High School also became part of Homeland Ghana’s menstrual health support work. Girls received access to sanitary products alongside menstrual health support. The programme was designed to address some of the challenges girls can experience managing their periods while at school and to support their confidence, wellbeing and participation in education. This support forms part of our wider commitment to ensuring that barriers outside the classroom do not prevent children from participating fully in their education.
Our partnership with Kori Basic School has also given students opportunities to take part in interactive learning activities beyond their regular lessons.
Students from Kori Primary and Kori Junior High School have participated in activities including LEGO workshops, puzzles, collaborative games, safeguarding sessions and child rights workshops.
Our child rights activities have also involved collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, helping students learn more about their rights, responsibilities, wellbeing and how to seek support when they need it.
Through practical and group-based activities, students have opportunities to develop skills such as teamwork, creativity, communication and problem-solving.
Kori Primary School and Kori Junior High School remain important partner schools in our work to help children attend school, participate fully and learn well.
