PADs
The Problem
In our 2019 research, we found that girls face challenges in education, leading to disengagement and poor academic performance. We focused on the issue of menstruation to understand why many girls in Ghana don’t attend or complete basic school. Further research revealed that many schoolgirls are unable to buy menstrual products each month and families unable to bear the rising cost. As a result, girls may use unhygienic materials to manage their periods, which can pose health risks and cause discomfort. This makes it difficult for girls to focus on their studies and participate well in school.
The Solution
PADs focuses on helping schoolgirls with menstrual hygiene and health education needs, by providing period products and information. Through surveys and brainstorming sessions, we gather and consider the girls’ thoughts and preferences in providing sanitary pads and health education, ensuring they are well-supported.
The Expected Outcome
Our aim is to make sure that the girls in the schools we support never miss any school days because they can’t access menstrual hygiene products or information.
School Supplies
The Problem
The lack of school supplies and teaching materials in Ghana directly affects school children’s education quality. Many students do not have access to essential supplies like textbooks and writing materials. Without these resources, students may have difficulty engaging and participating in class. Additionally, teachers face challenges in delivering high-quality lessons due to the lack of necessary materials and resources to facilitate an interactive and engaging learning environment.
The Solution
We take two approaches to solve the problem of not having enough school supplies and teaching materials in community schools in Ghana.
Equipping Students: The Readiness to Learn initiative gives students basic learning materials like pens, pencils, and exercise books at the start of each term, to support their learning.
Supporting Teachers: The Teacher’s Classroom Kit helps teachers by giving them classroom resources. Through this program, teachers receive boxes filled with items needed for a full term of teaching, funded by donors and local partners.
The Expected Outcome
To improve the learning environment for students and enhance student engagement and motivation, we aim to support teachers in delivering quality instruction, ultimately leading to improved academic performance.
Child Rights
The Problem
Child rights in Ghana, particularly in the Upper East region, are a major concern. Despite the presence of laws and regulations, both children and parents have limited understanding of these rights. In 2024, some parents send their young children to work on the farm or sell items instead of attending school regularly. Additionally, there have been numerous instances of children being harmed, and the children are often unaware of where to seek help or what support is available to them.
The Solution
The Child Rights Training program aims to educate parents about the importance of sending their children to school and providing them with a safe and nurturing environment for growth. It also seeks to empower children by providing them with knowledge about their rights. Through this program, children will become aware of the support systems in place for their well-being. Additionally, teachers will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and strategies to safeguard children from harm and will have reporting mechanisms in place to address any issues that may arise.
The Expected Outcome
The expected outcome of child rights training for parents, teachers, and children is to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where the rights of every child are respected and upheld. This includes empowering parents, teachers, and children with the knowledge and skills to understand and promote children’s rights, identify and address violations, and advocate for the well-being and protection of all children.
